Rep. McNerney Announces 2020 Congressional App Challenge Winner

Dec 30, 2020
Press Release

Stockton, CA – Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced that the winner of the 2020 Congressional App Challenge for the 9th Congressional District is Mountain House High School student, Advithi Kethidi.  Advithi’s app, HourShop, enables students to receive community service hours and help those in need.

Advithi came up with the idea for her app during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she realized the danger and difficulty high-risk populations encounter when running typical errands, such as getting groceries. She also found that students were being deprived of the opportunities to collect volunteer hours because of stay-at-home orders. Advithi designed her app as a solution for both of these situations: to provide an efficient way for students to earn community service hours during the pandemic while allowing high-risk individuals and families to stay home and stay safe.

“The promise of technology and this generation’s acute familiarity with these tools opens a world of possibilities to address our most pressing issues, while also presenting people with new opportunities,” said Congressman McNerney. “Advithi saw a need in our community – one that many are currently facing – and she designed a solution to not only connect people, but to provide a new way to give back. That is the beauty of technology: it can be harnessed to expand access to much needed services and revolutionize how members of our community engage with one another. I commend her for her thoughtfulness and hard work throughout the  development of this award-winning app.”

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Students compete with peers by creating and exhibiting their software application for web, PC, tablet, mobile, raspberry Pi or any other platform of their choice. The contest was open to all middle school and high school students who reside in California’s 9th Congressional District.
