Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney announced that he will deliver the keynote address at a fundraising dinner for Dignity’s Alcove, a Stockton-based nonprofit organization devoted to transitional housing and substance-abuse counseling for homeless veterans.

The “Black Tie Dinner and Bingo” is on Saturday, December 20 from 6 to 10:30 p.m at 701 E. Weber St. in Stockton.

“After just a year of existence and with limited resources, Dignity’s Alcove is already making a difference in the lives of homeless veterans in Stockton,” Rep. McNerney said.  “I was pleased to be invited to speak at the fundraising dinner and I will continue to do whatever I can to support the organization.”

“I’d like to thank Congressman McNerney for all his assistance and continued support of Dignity’s Alcove, Inc.,” said Mary Mims-Butts, who along with her husband, runs Dignity’s Alcove.  “It is with great gratitude that we commend the Congressman, who has time and time again shown his caring and support of the veterans of this great country.”

Rep. McNerney announced back in September that the organization would receive a $377,000 grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The money was to be used for building renovations, a new van and the creation of new 20-bed facility.  Unfortunately, the organization encountered difficulty because after finding a building it could rent long term, the building’s owner lost the property to foreclosure.

In addition to providing transitional housing and substance abuse counseling for local homeless veterans, Dignity’s Alcove also offers money management, drug and alcohol counseling and other classes to help veterans get back on their feet.
