Mar 19, 2014
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced he will host a financial literacy workshop on Saturday, March 22nd for residents of San Joaquin County.

The emphasis of the workshop will be on providing attendees with resources to help them make good financial decisions – including general tax information, tax implications of the Affordable Care Act, and financial aid resources for students of all ages.

“I’m glad to bring together so many resources under one roof.  Financial literacy is important throughout the year, and especially during tax season.  It’s nice that folks can access the tools to help them sort through some complicated issues.”

Representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the California Franchise Tax Board will speak about tax credits and tax law.  Information about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and how to apply will also be provided.

Covered California will be on hand to answer questions and assist those who want to sign up for health care coverage, before the open enrollment period comes to a close on March 31.

Delta College representatives will present information about student financial aid and advise attendees on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

And the U.S. Postal Inspection Service will talk about their efforts to protect consumer information and steps people can take to safeguard their mail at tax time.
